The Final Tests: Internalizing the Wisdom of Ekev
The pasuk says אדם לעמל יולד – man was created to toil. This means in order for each person to fulfill his mission in this world, it requires him to struggle and persevere. Although we hope for everything to always be easy and smooth, that is not always the case and that is not always what is best. We came here for a very unique purpose and the worst thing would be for a person to go through this world without fulfilling that purpose. The Mesilat Yesharim writes, Hashem puts us in a world with many things that try to distance us from Him. The reason is because we need to be tested to see how committed we’ll be to Hashem, despite the obstacles put in front of us. In the words of the Mesilat Yesharim, we go to war every day and we need to be soldiers to be victorious.
The purpose is to be able to cling to Him in this world, something called devekut. And the closer we get to Him, the more davuk we are. Although we don’t like challenges, we must always remember, if they come, they are a very big part of our existence and we must go through them the way Hashem wants us to in order to fulfill our purpose here.
