The Fortunate Man: Trusting Hashem over the Influential

There is a well-known question of the Bet Yosef – why do we celebrate Chanukah for eight days if the miracle was only for seven? The Saba from Kelm answered, the fact that oil works as a fuel for fire is in of itself a gift given to us by Hashem. He made it part of the natural way of the world, and therefore we got used to it and don’t necessarily see His hand every time we light a candle. On Chanukah, Hashem caused the flames to burn without sufficient oil. He reminded us that it is He who causes flames to burn, not oil. When that became so clear, we became obligated to thank Hashem even for His hidden miracle of always causing oil to produce flames. Even what appears to be the natural way of the world is actually the Yad Hashem; it’s just that we became accustomed to it.
Hashem does not need medications to heal, nor does He need oil to light fire. When we see His hand so clearly, it should lead us to appreciate His hidden involvement in everything that happens all the time.
