Odds Don't Matter: The Beauty of Hope Against Probability

We Can’t Do It By Ourselves
The Jewish People had miracles performed for them by Hashem during the days of Hanukkah. What did they do to merit those miracles? One of the mitzvot that they excelled in at that time was emunah. In general, every Jew has a certain level of emunah in Hashem. The way Rabbi Zamir Cohen explained it, there’s a benchmark and if a person’s emunah goes above that line, he merits that Hashem will deal with him above the rules of nature. Most people’s emunah falls below the line, but everyone has the ability to raise their emunah above it. When a person’s emunah is above that line, even if he has dinim or gezerot decreed upon him, they will all become nullified. The connection he makes with Hashem through this emunah is so strong, it elevates him to a new place above all judgments. This is the great segula of אין עוד מלבדו. When a person recognizes that the only One with any control is Hashem, no matter how it may look on the surface level.
Regarding war, if a person feels confident because he has a great army and powerful countries backing him then he does not fall in this category of high level emunah. He will still be subject to the regular rules of the world based on reward and punishment. But if the person would think, I know we have to use an army because we have to make a regular hishtadlut, but all of my comfort comes from knowing we have Hashem and He is the One who is really fighting the battle. If someone feels this way, he merits that extra level of protection because of his emunah.
This applies in every area of life. If a person truly feels that it is not his business that is earning him money, but rather it is Hashem, then his level of Emunah in business would be above the line and he would merit extra Heavenly assistance in that area.
When the Jewish People, with their inexperienced army, were willing to fight the mighty Greeks to enable themselves to keep Torah and mitzvot, it was only because they had this kind of bitachon. They understood אין עוד מלבדו – only Hashem is in charge of the war. And as long as they were connected to Him, they were able to defeat their enemy. This is how they were zocheh to miracles and this is how all of us can be zocheh to miracles.
