Taken for Granted: Appreciating Simple Mitzvot

Parashat Vayikra
Many of the mitzvot that we have taken for granted and many of the simple pleasures in life have been taken away from us. We’re not able to celebrate with a chatan and kallah at a chupa. We are not able to celebrate with a chatan bar mitzvah. We are not able to go to shul and pray three times a day in a regular minyan. We are not able to go to the bet midrash and learn Torah with chavrutot. We’re not able to gather with friends. We’re not able to play sports. We’re not able to go shopping and the list goes on. There are many messages to take from this.
One of them is we need to appreciate more what we had, the great gift Hashem gave us of living a regular day of life. As the expression goes, you don’t know what you have until it's gone. Fortunately for us, we have ways that we can get these things back, and one of them is by honestly appreciating and showing hakarat hatov to Hashem for what we did have and what we do have.
One of the messages we are getting right now is that we have to realize how good we had it before. We have to realize how much chesed Hashem does with us now on a daily basis. The yetzer hara is working overtime to stop us from appreciating. He’s telling us how bad we have it, how bad the economy is, how bad the health situation is, how bad the world is. Let us fight back and see the good in every moment of life. Let us appreciate what we could accomplish now every day from our homes. Let us appreciate our families, our houses, our ability to still learn and pray and grow. Let us appreciate health, food and basic necessities.
B’ezrat Hashem, Hashem will see our efforts and then give us even more reasons to appreciate. May we be zocheh to all gather together as one big unified nation to greet the Melech HaMashiach bikarov. Amen!
Shabbat Shalom!!
