The Right Mindset: Lessons from Yosef’s Prison Time
Parashat Vayeshev: Rather A Fiery Furnace
In this week’s parasha, Vayeshev, when Tamar was sentenced to the death penalty, rather than publicly humiliating Yehuda to save her own life, she said לאיש אשר אלה לו אנכי הרה – she produced the collateral that Yehuda gave her and gave him the choice if he wanted to confess. And Chazal learn from here, it is better for a person to jump into a fiery furnace rather than publicly humiliate someone else.
People’s feelings are a highly sensitive matter and we are to do whatever is in our power to prevent someone from being shamed and to hold ourselves back from shaming others. And if we are able to overcome our inclinations and do the will of Hashem, we will surely be rewarded greatly for it.
Shabbat Shalom!
