The Beautiful Endeavor: Toiling in the Torah

Parashat Bechukotai: A Most Beautiful Endeavor
The pasuk says in this week’s parasha, “"אם בחוקותי תלכו which Chazal explain to mean “שתהיו עמלים בתורה – that we are supposed to toil in the study of Torah.” And the pesukim go on to describe the most beautiful rewards for this endeavor, one of which is parnasa. There are two ways in which Hashem could bless a person in parnasa – one is actually giving him in abundance, and the other is like the pasuk says here, “ ואכלתם לחמכם לשובע" – which Rashi explains, “אוכל קמעא והוא מתברך בלבבו – a person could eat a little and become satiated with that. I have spoken with many people who toil in Torah, and each one of them has a different story of how Hashem supports them. Most say, “We can’t make sense of it on paper, but baruch Hashem, we have everything we need.”
