Virtuous Vatranut: The Power of Bending for Others

At this time of year, we're trying to find the most favor in Hashem's eyes. We want to know what steps we could take to accomplish this. The pasuk says, ועשית הישר והטוב בעיני ה' אלוקיך. There's a mitzvah to go beyond the letter of the law and do what is upright and good in the eyes of Hashem. Rabbi Eliyahu Lopian writes in his Sefer Lev Eliyahu, this is a mitzvah which specifically makes us find favor in Hashem's eyes. It is accomplished by doing things that we are not commanded to do, but we know would make Hashem proud if we did.
