The Whole Picture: Lessons from the Tragedy of the Meraglim

Parashat Pekudei: Our Job is to Do
In this week’s parasha Pikudei, Hashem commanded Moshe to erect the Mishkan for the first time. The Midrash Tanchuma tells us that Moshe replied he was not capable of doing so on his own. Hashem then told Moshe, you just go try and it will stand up on its own, and then I will write in the Torah that you did it, as it says ויקם משה את המשכן.
Chazal are teaching us here a very important rule regarding our role in avodat Hashem. Just because something may seem beyond our capabilities doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t try to accomplish it. After all, we just go through the motions and it’s Hashem who is actually accomplishing.
It does not matter who you are or what credentials you have. After all, it is not us who accomplish; it’s Hashem. We hope we will have the zechut that Hashem will choose us to be His messengers to do good in this world. And therefore, we always have to try. Our job is to do and Hashem’s job is to accomplish.
