Know Every Thought: Hashem’s Intimacy in Our Lives
Parashat Vaetchanan: All That Love
The pasuk says in this week’s parasha, Vaetchanan, we are to love Hashem בכל לבבך ובכל נפשך ובכל מאודך – with all of our desires, with all of our lives and with all of our money. The Ohr HaHaim Hakadosh explained the extent of what this pasuk is commanding us. The feelings of love that we are to have towards Hashem, should be equal to the love that the following individual would have for Him. Imagine a man was married for years, childless, living in abject poverty and became mortally ill. Then, all of a sudden, a navi sent by Hashem walked into his hospital room with a direct message, straight from HaKadosh Baruch Hu. The navi said, the man would soon completely recover from his illness, his wife would become pregnant and have a baby, and he would make a lucrative business deal that would earn him extreme wealth. The love that this man would feel towards Hashem at that time would be endless. This is the love that pasuk is telling every single Jew to constantly have for Hashem. בכל לבבך means as if we received all of our hearts desires. In our example, it was a baby. בכל נפשך means as if Hashem would have just saved a person’s life. ובכל מאודך means as if Hashem just gave a person all the money he could ever possibly need. Even getting one of these things would bring a person to have an overwhelming love for Hashem. We have to constantly feel as if we received all three directly from Him and then love Him accordingly. Imagination is very powerful. We need to use it to feel the feelings that this man whose life was just saved is feeling right now. Imagine what it feels like to have a child after so many years of waiting and imagine what it feels like to get unlimited money after being poor, and then take all that emotion and channel it towards feelings of love for Hashem who gives us everything.
