Held Back by Circumstance: The Value of the Sincere Desire

The pasuk says תמים תהיה עם ה' אלוקיך. When a person wholeheartedly accepts the way that Hashem is dealing with him, then עם ה' אלוקיך, he becomes one with Hashem. The Ya’arot Devash (1:6) writes that one of the ways in which a person can change din into rachamim is by accepting the way Hashem deals with him, with love. Usually, when a person has a problem, it takes up his entire mind and becomes his main focus. Very easily, he could block out all of the goodness in his life and feel bitter towards Hashem, chas v’shalom. If, on the other hand, the person says to himself, Hashem is doing to me exactly what I need to fulfill my purpose, and it’s all being done with love and mercy, that thought process would elevate him so much and bring him so close to Hashem, as well as bring about a favorable judgment for the upcoming year. This is easy to say but hard to do. It requires a true belief in Hashem’s love for us.
