The Gemara says in Masechet Baba Metzia, one of the reasons the Beit HaMikdash was destroyed was because the people were always going exactly by the letter of the law in their dealings with others, rather than showing mercy and going above and beyond their given rights. It is not easy to give in when we know we’re in the right, but knowing that Hashem gives extra mercy to people that are merciful to others should be enough of a motivation for us to do it.
Hashem runs the world. We get paid when He wants us to get paid and we get saved from losing money when He wants us to get saved. When we act above the letter of the law, it brings about so much extra Heavenly mercy.
