Decide if You Want Happiness: The Command to Not Covet

It says in Pirkei Avot that if a person is pleasing in the eyes of others, that is a sign that he is pleasing in the eyes of Hashem. One might think that a person should spend his time trying to find favor in the eyes of other people by doing their will and looking to please them in order that he should find favor in the eyes of Hashem. However, the Chovot HaLevavot in the Shaar Yichud Hama’aseh, perek 5, explains otherwise. The way it works is if a person spends his time trying to please Hashem and doing His will, then Hashem will show the person how much favor he’s finding in His eyes by making him well liked amongst people. And the way Hashem does that is by giving the person chen – charm. When someone is given chen, he will automatically be pleasing to everyone around him.
We all want chen from Hashem. The best way to get it is to focus more on doing His will and finding favor in His eyes.
