Pain in the Family: Healing through Heartfelt Care

Parashat Vayera: A Difficult Choice
The pasuk says in this week’s Parasha, Vayera, "ותאמר שרה צחוק עשה לי אלוקים כל השומע יצחק לי", and Rashi brings a midrash which explains that when Sarah gave birth many barren women also gave birth. As well, that day many people who were sick became healed. The Ruzhiner Rebbe asked, why did Sarah exclaim this as a day of such happiness? What did this do for her? The Rabbi explained that when everyone would see Avraham and Sarah having a baby at such an advanced age, knowing that they were the ones who were trying to promote the Name of Hashem in this world, it would have severely affected their free will. Seeing an open miracle like that would automatically make everyone believe in Hashem. But the purpose of this world is for us to choose to serve Hashem, and not for it to be obvious. Sarah did not want her miracle to take away people's free will, and so, when so many people who were barren had babies that day, it was an extra cause for celebration.
The tests in life may be difficult, but they are our purpose here and we should feel privileged to have the opportunities to pass them.
Shabbat Shalom!!!
