Accept Something New: Utilizing the Gift of Elul

Parashat Ekev: Our Loving Father
In this week’s parasha, Ekev, the Jewish People were told to remember the journey that Hashem took them on during their forty years in the desert. They were afflicted, they were put through difficult nisayonot and they had to realize "כאשר ייסר איש את בנו ה אלקיך מיסרך- the same way a father chastises his child, that is the way Hashem chastised them. A father will do anything to ensure that his child grows up to be an upstanding, righteous individual who he will be proud to call his son. Everything Hashem puts us through is because He wants us to become the great people we are capable of becoming.
Anyone going through difficulties has the same choice to make. They could either bemoan their fate and ask why everyone else is always happy and they have to suffer. Or, they could serve Hashem from amidst their difficulty and become the towering personality they are meant to become. If we could understand Hashem is our loving Father and is only bringing out the best in us, we’ll be able to accept the situations better, perform the way we are capable of performing, and thereby become the great and righteous individuals that Hashem will be proud to call His children.
Shabbat Shalom!
