Some people might say if I see Hashem make an open miracle, then I’ll believe in Him and observe Torah and mitzvot better. In those instances, most times, even if Hashem would make an open miracle for that person, he will not change his lifestyle. Believing in Hashem and observing Torah and mitzvot does not come from a one-time event or even multiple events. The Jewish People in Mitzrayim saw Hashem openly when He performed the ten makot and obliterated the Egyptians. Yet Chazal tell us, when it came time for the Jews to offer the korban Pesach, they were still attached to their avodah zara. Sometimes people say, “If Hashem does this for me then I’ll be better.” Hashem then ends up doing exactly what the person asked for, but He did it in such a hidden way it didn’t look like it was Him. Then, the person does not end up improving. Even when it is clear that Hashem does help us, we don’t necessarily change as a result.
Miracles don’t change people. If somebody wants to become more of a believer or more of an observer, it comes through learning with a desire to grow; learning about Hashem and learning Torah. They are what give us the spiritual energy we need to fight off the yetzer hara and do our jobs properly in this world. Seeing miracles is great but they are not what change us.
