Parashat Vayakhel: Shabbat And Emunah
In the beginning of parashat Vayakhel, we are commanded to refrain from doing melacha on Shabbat. The Torah tells us, by keeping Shabbat we are testifying that Hashem created the world. Hashem gave us our own abilities to create. By working all week and demonstrating those abilities, we can easily forget that Hashem is in control. Therefore Hashem commanded us to stop our work one day a week and acknowledge that He runs the world.
What type of work does Hashem want us to abstain from? What He calls melacha. There are 39 melachot. Those are the definitions of what work is. It does not matter what we feel should be allowed or what shouldn’t, or what we feel is rest or what isn’t. We are to follow what our Creator told us to refrain from. That is how we testify that Hashem created the world and that He is in charge of the world. By us honoring Shabbat the right way, we merit blessings and healings.
Shabbat is our testimony that we believe in Hashem. Let us keep it the way Hashem told us to keep it, and thereby proclaim our full emunah in Him.
Shabbat Shalom!
