The Power of Encouragement: Uplifting the Down and Out

The pasuk says in Tehillim, “אשרי הגבר אשר שם ה' מבטחו ולא פנה אל רהבים - Fortunate is the man who puts his trust in Hashem and does not turn to powerful and influential people for help.” The midrash says this pasuk is referring to Yosef Hatzadik who put all of his trust in Hashem. Yet the very same midrash says that Yosef was punished with two extra years in jail for asking the Sar Hamashkim for help to get out. How could the midrash praise Yosef for not turning to powerful people if it says that he did?
Hashem is our father. He is the only one with any control. Someone who knows that with such clarity like Yosef Hatzadik does not need to ask anyone else for help. People like us are supposed to make a hishtadlut that makes sense in the natural way of the world. But at least we have to know for a fact that it is only Hashem who really has control, and whatever hishtadlut we are making will only work if it's His will.
The clearer we are with that, the more effective our hishtadlut will be. As well, the higher levels we reach in Bitachon, the less of a hishtadlut we will need to make.
Happy Chanuka!
