Meriting the Mitzvah: How Torah Leads to Virtue

Chazal teach us, whoever learns Torah lishma will merit many great blessings, one of which is “ומקרבתו לידי זכות” which the Midrash Shmuel explains to mean Hashem will enable him to fulfill mitzvot which would normally be out of his reach. The Chovot HaLevavot writes, when Hashem wants to give a person a present, He presents him with a mitzvah opportunity. There is no greater commodity in this world that a mitzvah and, for those who value them, Hashem helps them do more. It says in Pirkei Avot, “שכר מצוה מצוה” – in the merit of a person’s performance of a mitzvah, Hashem gives that person another mitzvah opportunity. We find people who are very involved in chesed and it seems like whenever a new chesed opportunity arises, they are somehow always at the forefront of it. That is not an accident. Because they value chesed so much, Hashem helps them with more and more chesed opportunities. If someone wants to be more involved in any type of mitzvah, he has to first take the initiative and do all in his power to accomplish it. And then he will receive Heavenly help to be able to do more of it.
