A Friend’s Need: The Magic of Praying for Others
Parashat Shofetim
The Gemara says that whoever prays for his friend, when he also has that same need, he is answered first. What's the explanation? It's not a magical Segula. The commentaries explain that the self-sacrifice involved in praying for someone else to get what you want is so enormous that it alone provides the merit to give you what you want
It is told about Rav Avigdor Miller zt"l, whenever he would part from someone, he would whisper a short prayer, saying, "Hashem, please let that man enjoy what he is about to do. Let him enjoy his family tonight or his dinner or his learning." He truly wanted others to be happy. One of our main jobs in this world is to break our natural inclinations and perfect ourselves. We will find that although it is difficult, it will make us so much happier and bring so much blessing.
