Nullifying the Self: The Greatest Service
One of the greatest ways that we can serve Hashem is by completely nullifying ourselves to Him, recognizing that we have nothing and that we are nothing, as the pasuk says, “כי מידך הכל, ומידך נתנו לך – everything is from Hashem and from His hand we give Him back.
Now is the time that we can solidify in ourselves true feelings of humility. We have nothing. We can’t do anything without Hashem. Every mitzvah that we are able to perform is only because of Hashem’s chesed. Every dollar that we earn is only because of His chesed. B’ezrat Hashem, soon we’ll be able to go outside again without masks, soon we’ll be able to go back to shul and work. We can’t go back and act as if nothing happened. We must rise above the pettiness of life. Let’s learn to be happier when someone else gives a great speech or when someone else does something better than we do. Let’s be happy when someone else gets the best aliyah or when someone else has success. These are great acts of humility, which is such a great mitzvah. Let us truly be humble, and not feel haughty about it.
