Preparing for Matan Torah: Improving Character

During these days of Sefirat HaOmer, we are preparing for Kabbalat HaTorah by improving our middot. An important principle to keep in mind when working on our character is that we possess the ability to completely control our emotions.
We have opportunities every day to work on our hearts, to train ourselves, to want others to have good, to be happy for them when they receive good fortune — even if we wanted the same thing for ourselves. For example, if our friend’s child just got engaged, and we were hoping our child would get engaged, that’s a great opportunity to work on this middah. Every improvement goes a long way. The more we can improve our middot, the purer our hearts will become.
