Service of the Heart: The Essence of Bitachon
The Chovot Levavot in the Shaar Avodat Elokim (perek 4) writes that having bitachon in Hashem is one of the mitzvot which we fulfill with our heart. The essence of bitachon is the feeling of tranquility and peace of mind which comes about through the knowledge that our lives are being controlled by Hashem. We are always in the hands of our merciful and loving Father and He always does what is absolutely best for us. If a person is feeling anxious or worried and he manages to review the principles of emunah and bitachon and rids himself of that worry and instead replaces it with a feeling of tranquility, knowing he is b’yad Hashem then he will have fulfilled a great mitzvah called bitachon.
At this time, the question we should be asking ourselves is: Are we doing the will of Hashem? Not only in taking health precautions, but in every aspect of our lives. So many of the distractions of the world have been removed from us at this moment. It is an opportune time to think about the path we are taking. Are we fulfilling our potential? Are we honestly living the lives that Hashem wants us to be living? If we could figure out how to improve, then we know we are on the right path. The only fear we should be having is in regard to our religious performance. Regarding our physical lives, however, we are completely b’yad Hashem. We make our hishtadlut and the rest is up to Him. If we could remove the worry in that area, we’ll also fulfill the great mitzvah of having bitachon in Hashem.
