Bring More Blessing: The Holiness of Shabbat

Parashat Bereshit: Bring More Blessing Into Your Life
The pasuk says in this week’s parasha, Bereshit, “ויברך אלוקים את יום השביעי – Hashem blessed the day of Shabbat." The Zohar HaKadosh writes in Parashat Yitro this means that any beracha found, whether in the Upper Worlds or in our world, are all dependent on Shabbat. The more of Shabbat we could have, the better. The Mishna Berura in Siman 261 rules that there is a mitzvah from the Torah to accept Shabbat early. We say in the Kabbalat Shabbat in Arbit – “לקראת שבת לכו ונלכה כי היא מקור הברכה – let’s go and greet Shabbat because it is the source of blessing." If we greet Shabbat early, we can bring more blessings into our lives.
Our Rabbis teach us, Shabbat is the bride of the Jewish People. We are the chatan and it is the kallah. Accepting Shabbat early is greeting our spouse early. An older single told, when she heard Shabbat is the source of all blessing, she accepted upon herself to accept Shabbat 30 minutes earlier than the normal custom in her locale and after just two weeks, she met the person who eventually became her chatan.
Shabbat Shalom!!
