Do Not Veer: The Wisdom of the Sages

The Pasuk says in this week’s Parasha, Shoftim, “לא תסור מן הדבר אשר יגידו לך ימין ושמאל-Do not veer from what the sages tell you, neither right nor left.” The Midrash explains, we are to have Emunah in our Rabbis, even if they tell us something that seems opposite of what we think it should be; we should still trust in them anyway. A Tzaddik has a certain Siyata Dishmaya. The Gemara says, “צדיק גוזר והקב"ה מקיים – When a Tzaddik says something, Hashem fulfills it.” This applies to the Rabbis in each and every generation. They have a certain divine foresight that is beyond us.
Our Rabbis are able to see things that we can’t. And therefore, we are to seek their advice and counsel whenever possible. And of course, it goes without saying, whenever it comes to Halachic questions, we should ask them and listen to what they have to say and not veer from what they say to the right or to the left.
Shabbat Shalom.
