Receiving Kindness: The Ripple Effect of Doing Good
The More Kindness We Do
The Mesilat Yesharim (chap. 19) writes, “העושה חסד יקבל חסד– someone who does kindness to others will receive kindness himself,” as Chazal tell us in Masechet Shabbat, “כל המרחם על הבריות מרחמין עליו מן השמים – whoever has mercy on others will receive extra mercy from Hashem.” One of the ways Hashem deals with us is מדה כנגד מדה which means the way we act towards others is the way He acts towards us.
Doing chesed for others is so precious. We might not see the rewards immediately, but the Mishna guarantees, it is a mitzvah that pays dividends in this world as well. Hashem notices every little effort we put in to doing for others. We might not always be successful in helping them, but Hashem pays just for the efforts, not for the results. העושה חסד יקבל חסד – the more kindness we do, the more kindness we’ll receive.
