Faith in the Darkness: The Lessons of Av

The month of Av is rosheh tevot, an acronym, for אמונתך בלילות– to believe in Hashem during the darkest times. During these days as we mourn the tragedies that have befallen our people throughout the generations, we must strengthen ourselves and recognize that Hashem was there with us throughout those dark times, as hard as it is to imagine. When Hashem appeared to Moshe Rabbenu for the first time at the Burning Bush, He told him, “Tell the Jewish People that I’m with them during this hard slavery in Egypt, and I will be with them throughout all the other exiles as well.” For a person to know that Hashem is still with him during the dark times can give him so much chizuk.
This month is called Menachem Av, which means Comforting Father. Let us take consolation, during the mourning period, that we always have our Comforting Father with us.
