Every Event is a Kindness: Redefining Chesed
Everything that happens to us is a kindness from Hashem. If He gives us what we’re asking for, it’s a chesed, and if He doesn’t give us what we’re asking for, it’s also a chesed. We need to trust that Hashem knows better than us what we need.
We need to train ourselves to appreciate and thank Hashem all of the time, because even though we can’t understand why He doesn’t give us certain things and we don’t understand why we have to go through certain situations, we could trust that He knows better than us, and we can believe that it’s good and thank Him and earn infinite rewards for every thank you. By nature, we like to complain when things don’t go the way we want. If we could change our nature to become a different kind of person, it will benefit us greatly.
An even higher level is to thank Hashem not only for what you have, but to thank Hashem for what others have. To see someone else who had a child get married and say, “Thank You Hashem for giving him joy now.” That is very beautiful. And an even higher level is to thank Hashem for what someone else has, even though you might feel that it should have been yours. Each time we could show appreciation, we’re expressing our emunah that it came from Hashem. It will make us happier people and we’ll also enable Hashem, kavayachol, to reward us with all of the rewards He wants to bestow upon us.
