A Successful Day: Redefining Failure in the Office
A Very Successful Day
It could happen that a person comes home from the office feeling down that he didn’t make any sales that day. He feels like a failure, and it takes a toll on his family life. If he could only think, there’s so much more to life than money. That is the area where we have the least control over. Our finances are designated by Hashem according to the way He knows we need to receive them. If a person was able to do a mitzvah, help another person, pray, learn – he had a great day. If he overcame a struggle to do the right thing, he had a spectacular day. In the areas of life that he was in charge of, he handled correctly. That is the way we measure success. When we merit to perform a mitzvah, we’re supposed to feel happier than if we were the winners of the biggest lottery. The mitzvot make us shine before Hashem and we should even be willing to pay money to have the zechut to be doing any of them.
The mitzvot are our glory. If we had the merit to do a lot of them over the course of a day, we should be overjoyed with the knowledge that we had a very successful day.
