Mishpatim: A Warning Against Causing Pain
Parashat Mishpatim-Not Just the Widow and Orphan
In this week's Parasha, Mishpatim, the Torah warns us not harm or pain a widow or orphan. The Pasuk says: "כי אם צעוק יצעק אלי"-If they will cry out to Hashem for help, "שמוע אשמע צעקתו"-Hashem will surely listen to their cries. Although Hashem listens to everyone, the Torah is teaching us that He gives special attention to the cries of these individuals. Rabbenu Bachya explains that ordinarily, if someone is being bullied, he will seek help from others who can assist him. But the widow and orphans are weak and don't have anyone to turn to. When they are bullied, they turn straight to Hashem ,the מלך עוזר ומושיע ומגן-the only One who really helps. Because they know that it is only Hashem who can help them, they receive more assistance than anybody else.
When the צעקה (crying out) is אלי(to Hashem)-when we know who is really giving us, "שמוע אשמע צעקתו"-we will surely be helped.
Shabbat Shalom!
