What is Emunah? Moving Beyond Simple Belief
The Chovot HaLevavot in the Shaar HaBitachon (perek 4) teaches us the proper approach when asking someone else for a favor. The main work to be done takes place before the meeting, in the mind of the one seeking the favor. It goes without saying he must first pray to Hashem and ask Him to help. But then, he must realize, the individual he is asking the favor from does not have any say on whether or not he is going to receive the help that he is seeking. All the person is accomplishing with the meeting is finding out if Hashem is going to give him what he wants through this individual. Hashem is the only One with any say, and He could give the person the help he needs through any way He sees fit. People are just messengers and we have seen proof of this time and time again.
