Messengers of Support: Recognizing Hashem as the Source
The Maggid Mesharim writes before the Neshamah of a person comes down to this world, it is right near the kiseh hakavod of Hashem, basking in the radiance of the Shechinah. If a person does his job properly here, he merits going to the highest places in Gan Eden and enjoying the radiance of the Shechinah. The question is, if we were already in the greatest place we can be in, what’s the purpose of coming down to this world, if the goal is just to go back there? Many sefarim including the Maggid Mesharim and the Ramchal explain it as follows: receiving something that we did not earn has an element of shame involved. And that shame will prevent us from having the ultimate pleasure. Hashem wants us to have the greatest pleasures for all eternity. And so he created this entire world just to give us the opportunity to earn our reward.
Every time we have to work hard to keep Torah and Mitzvot, we should know this is where our glory lies. That is how we are going to earn our stay in the future world and have complete enjoyment without any shame.
