Shabbat and Emunah: Refraining to Recognize the Source

The sefer Mitzvot Katan writes that the mitzvah of having hope in Hashem’s salvation is included in the first of the Asseret Hadiberot – אנכי ה' אלוקיך – because someone who believes in Hashem knows that He could always help him no matter how dismal a situation appears to be. Singles who have been trying for years to get married find it very difficult to continue hoping. Some have not received calls in months or even years, and they don’t see any reason why things should change. This is where they have to tell themselves, I’m going to work on myself and do my best to fulfill the great mitzvah of believing in Hashem’s salvation, even though there does not seem to be any reason בדרך הטבע to feel that way. I’m going to believe that, in the blink of an eye, I could receive a phone call from somebody suggesting my zivug and, just like that, I’ll be married. And I’m going to pray with that emunah, even though it is so difficult.
Everyone can experience this wonderful feeling of yeshua no matter how long it has been. Our job before it happens is to hope and pray with full belief in Hashem’s abilities to help and thereby fulfill the great mitzvah of hope found in the very first of the Aseret Hadiberot.
