Pure Goodness: Understanding the Source of Mercy

The Pasuk says in Tehilim: “טוב ה' לכל-Hashem is good to everyone- no exceptions." Hashem is pure goodness and only does good. But, writes the Chovot HaLevavot in the Shaar HaBechina, most people become blinded from recognizing Hashem’s goodness, which results in them being bitter instead of appreciative. One of the reasons for this, he says, is the various mishaps and damages which take place in their lives. They don’t understand that even those misfortunes are blessings in disguise. They are all complete kindnesses from Hashem because He is so loving. In His great wisdom, He knows exactly what each person needs to be successful in his life, and He acts with him accordingly. But because the people don’t understand Hashem, they complain and feel like He is just “picking” on them. And then they are not able to appreciate the thousands of blessings in their lives, because they are too busy feeling bad for themselves.
