Weekly Parasha
Blessing of Wealth: Hashem in Charge of Parnassah
In the beginning of this week's parasha, Pinchas, the Torah tells us about the rewards that Pinchas received for his great acts of zealousness, killing Zimri and stopping the plague from the Jewish People. One of the rewards that he received was ברית כהונת עולם, that Pinchas would be an eternal Kohen. The obvious question is that Pinchas's father, Elazar, was already a Kohen and his grandfather Aharon was already a Kohen, so why was becoming a Kohen a reward? Seemingly, he was a Kohen already. Rashi quotes from the Gemara that when Aharon became a Kohen, that honor was given to him and his children and anyone born after that. Pinchas, however, was a grandchild who was already born at that time and therefore he was excluded from it. All the grandchildren born after that were all born Kohanim. Imagine how difficult it must have been for Pinchas growing up in a family of Kohanim while he was the only one not a Kohen. All of his relatives were able to do the avodah in the Mishkan, but he wasn't. All of his relatives were able to eat teruma but he wasn't. All of his relatives were able to do Birkat Kohanim, but he was not.
There is always a much bigger picture in life, way more than meets the eye. If we are able to have emunah in Hashem and feel happy that He gives us exactly what we need, then we will be doing one of the greatest services possible. That emunah will also help us in our own lives immensely. And it is what Chazal tell us will be the zechut for our final geula. May it come speedily, Amen.
Shabbat Shalom!
