Sustaining Light: Pure Olive Oil for the Menorah

Rabbenu Bachya writes in his introduction to Sefer Bereshit that the Torah has the wisdom of Hashem inside of it. Furthermore, any wisdom that can possibly be found in this world, Hashem included in the Torah. And that is why it is called תמימה – it is complete – because everything is encompassed in it. The mishnah in Pirkei Avot tells us דכולה בה– which Rabbenu Yona explains to mean every wisdom is found in the Torah. Hashem shared with us the secrets of Creation. Regular students learning in yeshiva are taught things that the wisest men of the generation do not know. How fortunate are we to have the zechut to learn Torah whenever we want. Although it gives us chizuk in emunah when we see information in the Torah about the world that scientists have only recently discovered, we should be no less impressed by anything we learn in it because it is all the wisdom of Hashem. But we can use those instances when we do clearly see how the Torah encompasses all forms of wisdom to give us more of an appreciation for this unbelievable gift that Hashem has shared us.
הפוך בה, הפוך בה דכולה בה– our Torah encompasses all forms of wisdom. It was given to us by the Creator of everything, who put inside of it the deepest secrets of the world. Every time we learn it we are accessing its wellspring of wisdom.
