Hardship is Not Rejection: Realizing Worth during Trials

In this week’s parasha Vayishlach, we read about the encounter between Yaakov and Easav after being separated for over 20 years. Eisav had been harboring hatred for Yaakov all that time, to the point that there was never a greater hatred than the one that Eisav had for Yaakov. As our Chazal said in noting the phenomenon of anti-Semitism- halacha Eisav soneh Yaakov. Yet, when they finally did meet, for that short time period, Hashem turned the heart of Eisav and instead of killing Yaakov, he hugged and kissed him. Hashem changed the heart of Eisav to protect Yaakov.
Words can be very harmful. They can ruin marriages. They can ruin friendships and all different kinds of relationships. But hope is never lost because Hashem is in charge of the way people think and He could even help us prevent the devastating damages that words could inflict. Of course, we should think before we speak and never put ourselves in these positions, but if we ever did lose ourselves and say the wrong things, we could still beg Hashem for mercy to soften the other person’s heart and allow the relationship to continue.
May Hashem save us from getting into these situations to begin with, but if chas v’shalom they did occur, may Hashem help us get out of them.
Shabbat Shalom!
