Parashat Shelach: The Benefit Of Mitzvot
The Ohr HaChaim brings down the Midrash in this week’s Parasha, Shelach, which says that when Moshe Rabbenu saw that the מקושש עצים violated Shabbat, he said to Hashem, “During the week we have the mitzvah of tefillin to remind us to keep the other mitzvot, but on Shabbat we don’t wear tefillin. What is going to remind us to keep the Torah properly?” Hashem replied, I am giving you the mitzvah of tzitzit, which is worn even on Shabbat and that will help you keep the other mitzvot. This, says the Da’at Zekanim is why the Torah juxtaposes the מקושש עצים and the parasha of tzitzit.
The mitzvot are here to benefit us. They protect us and they elevate us. And most importantly, they bring us closer to Hashem.
Shabbat Shalom!
